“UN-HABITAT and the University British Columbia have announced a partnership to create the UBC / UN-HABITAT Archives which will be the world’s most complete online repository of information on building sustainable cities.
In a statement read on her behalf, UN-HABITAT’s Executive Director, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka said she was delighted to learn that the Vancouver-based university had taken initiative to build a virtual human settlements information centre containing critical print and electronic material from Habitat’s first conference held in1976 up to and including the 2006 World Urban Forum III both of which took place in Vancouver.
The resulting web-based UBC / UN-HABITAT Archive will provide an invaluable resource for learning, teaching and practice on our towns and cities locally, nationally, and globally, she observed.”

“In December 2006, Brad Pitt convened a group of experts in New Orleans to brainstorm about building green affordable housing on a large scale to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. Having spent time with community leaders and displaced residents determined to return home, Pitt realized that an opportunity existed to build houses that were not only stronger and healthier, but that had less impact on the environment.
Make It Right’s goal is to join the history of the Lower 9th Ward with creative new architectural solutions mindful of environmental and personal safety concerns in order to encourage both the evolution of aesthetic distinctiveness and the conscientious awareness of natural surroundings.
To that end, MIR assembled a team of fourteen local, national and international world-renowned architecture firms specializing in innovative, ecologically responsible design.

The IF Research Group (grif - Université de Montréal), in collaboration with i-Rec and the CIB, organizes the conference-workshop:
”Building abroad: Procurement of construction and reconstruction projects in the international context”
The conference will be held at the Faculté de l’aménagement, Université de Montréal, October 23, 24 and 25, 2008. The conference includes workshops, group meetings and keynote presentations around three main themes: (a) Private projects, (b) Public projects and PPPs, and (c) Humanitarian aid and international development. The deadline for receiving abstracts is Januray 14, 2008.

The international students competition on post-disaster reconstruction is a successful i-Rec initiative that has had excellent results in the past and that is recognized for the high quality of its projects.
In this fourth edition 2008 we will have various Universities and Schools of Architecture participating (from Canada, the UK, Colombia, Italy, Iran, the US and others). The participating projects will be exhibited in two different events:

Il compte aujourd’hui sur l’engagement et au professionnalisme de plus de 1 200 architectes et ingénieurs qui sont intervenus dans plus de 20 pays depuis la naissance de l’organisation.
La mise en place de la section canadienne permettra aux Architectes de l’urgence d’être encore plus efficaces dans leurs interventions, en particulier celles touchant les Amériques.”

In 2001 the firm decided to broaden the scope of building gingerbread houses in order to raise funds for a worthwhile local initiative. The relationships of shelter, home, comfort and necessity borne from this seasonal tradition was the genesis of Design Hope. In researching community agencies that assist individuals in need Hamilton Out of the Cold (HOOTC) was chosen. This organization is interdenominational; there is no proselytism; and the clients are treated with respect. Hamilton Out of the Cold exists solely on donations from the community, so their need was great.”

“For centuries, Djenné’s architecture has been sculpted and renewed by the town’s masons. Mud bricks and secret incantations combine to make houses, and each year the majestic mosque is dressed with a fine new coating of mud. Konmusa is heir to this masonry tradtion and he plans for his son to succeed him in the trade. But classroom education and connections to a globalizing world deliver new opportunities and lifestyles, and continuity is threatened.”

“Le laboratoire d’étude de l’architecture potentielle (L.E.A.P.) de l’École d’architecture de l’Université de Montréal tiendra un colloque intitulé Repenser et redéfinir le logement social en centre-ville le 6 octobre prochain à la Faculté d’aménagement de l’Université de Montréal.
Il s’agit d’une activité publique qui vise à élargir le débat sur le logement social comme agent de renouveau urbain. Articulé autour de deux récents concours d’architecture ouverts aux étudiants à la maîtrise, le colloque débutera par une brève présentation des projets de concours, il sera suivi d’une table ronde qui réunira des architectes, des spécialistes de l’architecture et de la ville. En après-midi, les participants au colloque seront conviés à des ateliers de discussion visant à approfondir la question du logement social comme agent de renouveau urbain de façon générale et plus particulièrement au centre-ville de Montréal.”
L’inscription est gratuite mais obligatoire avant le 3 octobre.
